Linux / AIX Systems Engineer

Linux / AIX Systems Engineer Summary:

The Senior Linux / AIX Systems Engineer will be skilled in the AIX and RedHat flavors of UNIX and will be part of a team of UNIX administrators that administer, maintain and support all UNIX based server hardware and Operating Systems. The team is responsible for the support and maintenance of all UNIX Server hardware and Operating Systems (predominately Red Hat Linux (v4/5/6/7) and AIX (v6.1/7.1) and also includes Solaris, HP-UX, and other Linux distributions.


Linux / AIX Systems Engineer Responsibilities and Required Skills:
  • Associates or Bachelor’ s Degree preferred, technical education or equivalent experience in the computer field required AND 7+ years’ experience in the client server area
  • Monitor the environment for performance and stability that meets Service Level Objectives
  • 7+ years of experience with design, architecture, support and recovery of UNIX systems environments with AIX and Red Hat Linux. IBM POWER Series experience is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience with server virtualization using VMWare
  • Maintain system patching levels, ensure current system backups, analyze for performance tuning
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis on incidents on systems, hardware and OS/software
  • Produce reports and metrics essential for proper management of the UNIX environment
  • Maintain the environment to satisfy security requirements set by business drivers and Information Security department
  • Handle escalation of reported incidents related to all facets of the UNIX environment
  • Work with peers across multiple business units
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation, and other duties assigned
  • Virtualization experience including performing server physical to virtual migrations
  • Knowledge of high-performance storage and clustered file systems using GPFS/Veritas and other software
  • Knowledge of LVM, Veritas, and other volume management tools for UNIX servers as well as the technologies that utilize them
  • Strong working knowledge of networking architectures and protocols including TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, SSH, SFTP
  • Strong UNIX shell scripting experience and an ability to support existing scripted processes; Perl, Ruby, or Python experience preferred


Linux Experience:
  • Enterprise environment experience with RedHat v6 or v7
  • RedHat Satellite  Server, Chef, Puppet, and/or Ansible experience is preferred
  • RedHat certification is preferred
  • Knowledge of RedHat IDM and ldap preferred
  • Knowledge of system internals, LVM, file system, network, and server performance utilizing Dtrace/truss/strace and other tools to troubleshoot and understand system performance.
  • Knowledge of kick start/jump start/comvault/netbackup and other backup technologies


AIX Experience:
  • NIM installs and upgrades
  • Power HACMP system upgrades
  • Power 7 experience; prefer experience decommissioning Power 5/6
  • Z series experience preferred
  • Oracle or DB2 database systems preferred
