Dell & Rubrik Data Protection Engineer
Location: Hybrid (Atlanta) Dell & Rubrik Data Protection Engineer Job Summary:
We are looking for a highly skilled Data Protection Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and management of comprehensive data protection solutions for both cloud-based and on-premise environments. This role will also focus on SAAS-based data protection for Office 365 (O365), ensuring robust backup, recovery, and compliance for business-critical data. The ideal candidate will be an expert in Dell Avamar, Data Domain, and Rubrik (Enterprise version) solutions, with specific experience in managing backups across hybrid environments, including cloud services, on-premise infrastructure, and SAAS applications like O365.

Dell & Rubrik Data Protection Engineer Key Responsibilities:

Hybrid Data Protection Solutions:
Architect and deploy data protection solutions that encompass both cloud-based and on-premise infrastructures. This includes backup and recovery strategies for data residing in local data centers as well as cloud environments such as Azure and OCI.
Cloud and On-Premise Data Management:
Manage a mix of on-premise and cloud-hosted backup solutions, leveraging Dell Avamar with Data Domain, and Rubrik for both on-premise or cloud-native workloads. Ensure optimized protection of data, whether stored locally or in public/private cloud environments.
SAAS-Based Data Protection for O365:
Implement and manage SAAS-based data protection solutions specifically for Microsoft O365, ensuring comprehensive coverage for Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Develop strategies to ensure fast, reliable recovery from data loss or corruption across all SAAS platforms.
SQL and Oracle Backups (On-Prem and Cloud):
Configure and manage backup and recovery solutions for SQL and Oracle databases in both cloud and on-premise environments. Ensure the highest levels of data availability, seamless restoration, and adherence to RPO/RTO metrics.
Backup Infrastructure Management:
Administer a scalable and efficient backup infrastructure utilizing Dell Avamar, Data Domain, and Rubrik, ensuring that the solution is optimized for performance across hybrid cloud and on-premise environments. This includes deduplication, replication, and storage tiering.
Monitoring, Automation, and Optimization:
Monitor and report on backup performance and reliability using tools such as Data Domain Management Center and Rubrik Security Cloud. Develop scripts (PowerShell, Python, Bash) to automate and enhance backup workflows across hybrid environments.
Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity:
Design and test disaster recovery (DR) strategies for hybrid cloud and on-premise environments, ensuring that critical data is secure and recoverable during a disaster scenario. Implement DR plans for cloud-based systems in alignment with on-premise continuity strategies.
Compliance and Data Security:
Ensure compliance with industry regulations (GDPR, PCI-DSS, SOC 2 and HIPPA) and internal security policies for both on-premise and cloud data. Use encryption, role-based access control, and auditing to maintain strict security standards.
Collaboration with IT Teams:
Work closely with cloud architects, database administrators, and security teams to ensure alignment between data protection strategies and broader IT objectives. Contribute to cross-functional projects aimed at enhancing data availability and resilience.
Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:
Document all data protection workflows, configurations, and standard operating procedures, and train junior staff and other IT team members on data protection best practices for hybrid environments.

Dell & Rubrik Data Protection Engineer Required Skills and Experience:

Dell Avamar:
- Extensive experience configuring and managing Avamar for on-premise backup and deduplication. Proficiency in managing virtualized environments (e.g., VMware) with Avamar and ensuring fast restores and optimized backup processes.
- Experience integrating Avamar with cloud environments via Dell EMC Cloud Tier.
Dell Data Domain:
- Expertise in managing Data Domain for on-premise storage, focusing on data deduplication, backup replication, and long-term archival storage. Experience with cloud storage tiering, linking on-premise Data Domain appliances with cloud-based storage solutions.
- Familiarity with Data Domains integration into hybrid architectures.
Rubrik (Enterprise version):
- Experience with Rubriks hybrid data management solutions, including both on-premise clusters and cloud deployments. Knowledge of managing SLA domains, backup policies, and retention strategies across mixed cloud and on-premise environments.
- Strong proficiency with Rubriks APIs for automating backup tasks and ensuring integration between on-premise and cloud infrastructures.
SAAS-Based O365 Backup:
- Demonstrated expertise in deploying and managing Rubrik-based SAAS backup solutions for O365, ensuring the backup of Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Experience with ensuring high availability and fast recovery for SAAS applications.
- Familiarity with other SAAS data protection tools such as Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 or Barracuda Cloud-to-Cloud Backup.
SQL and Oracle Backups:
- Expertise in configuring and managing SQL and Oracle database backups in Rubrik and Avamar environments, both on-premise and in the cloud. Knowledge of transaction log backups, full backups, and complex point-in-time restores.
Hybrid Cloud and On-Premise Data Management:
- Experience with both cloud-native and on-premise backup and recovery architectures, including managing cloud storage integration with on-premise infrastructure. Knowledge of AWS, Azure and OCI backup solutions.
Monitoring and Automation Tools:
- Proficiency with monitoring tools such as Rubrik Security Cloud and Data Domain Management Center, and scripting languages (PowerShell, Python) to automate hybrid cloud and on-prem backup processes.
Disaster Recovery in Hybrid Environments:
- Experience in designing and implementing DR strategies that span on-premise and cloud environments, ensuring seamless data protection and recovery in diverse environments.

Dell & Rubrik Data Protection Engineer Preferred Skills and Experience:

Cloud Backup Solutions:
- Experience with native cloud backup tools such as Azure Backup or OCI Backup and DR, and their integration with on-premise infrastructure.
Other Backup Technologies:
- Familiarity with comparable solutions such as Veeam, Commvault, and Veritas NetBackup, demonstrating adaptability to different enterprise backup platforms.
Automation & Orchestration Platforms:
- Experience with infrastructure automation tools like Ansible, Chef, or Puppet to streamline and automate data protection tasks across hybrid environments.
Storage Solutions:
- Familiarity with enterprise storage solutions such as Dell PowerFlex or PowerMax which complement hybrid backup solutions.

Dell & Rubrik Data Protection Engineer Education and Certifications (Preferred):

Bachelors Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
Equivalent work experience will be considered.
Certifications (preferred):
- Dell EMC Proven Professional Certification (Avamar, Data Domain Specialist)
- Rubrik Certified Systems Administrator (RCSA) or Rubrik Certified Professional (RCP)
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (or O365 specific certifications)
- Microsoft Azure certifications

Soft Skills:
