Sr. Storage & Virtualization UNIX Engineer – Practice Lead (Architect level)


Sr. UNIX Engineer Storage & Virtualization Job Requirements & Responsibilities:

  • 10+ years total experience in IT, including 6+ years in a production 24/7 high consumer traffic Web environment, including Web hosting, security and information protection, load balancing implementations and high availability networks.
  • Bachelor' s Degree in an Information Technology field of study; Masters Preferred.
  • Heavy experience with UNIX engineering & administration to build, maintain and support all UNIX based server hardware and Operating Systems.  Primary OS will be Red Hat Linux but prior experience with Enterprise UNIX systems required.  Experience migrating Enterprise UNIX OS to Red Hat Linux preferred (Solaris, AIX, RedHat, HP-UX).
  • Experience with Red Hat Linux (RHEL) v. 6/7/8
  • Proficient experience with automation & scripting with languages such as Shell, PERL, Python, and/or tools such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and Red Hat Satellite Server. 
  • 7+ years working in large complex datacenter environments working in SAN/Storage Administration.
  • Responsible for architecture design and maintenance of Next Generation Distributed Storage including AFA All Flash Array, file storage, object storage, and block storage.
  • Responsible for technology strategy, engineering standards, methodologies, task-plans and best practices for Enterprise Infrastructure including UNIX / Linux systems, VMWare virtualization and NetApp storage.
  • Hands-on Engineering with NetApp and Pure Storage All Flash Arrays (AFA).
  • Strong understanding of datacenter consolidations including Iaas, PaaS, capacity planning, virtualization and best practices.
  • Experience with VMWare virtualization environments and capacity/cost strategy.
  • Cloud Technologies preferred: AWS & Azure
  • Person should have a technical competency and knowledge with knowledge of system internals, LVM, file system, network, and server performance utilizing Dtrace/truss/strace and other tools to troubleshoot and understand system performance.
  • Knowledge of kick start/jump start/commvault/netbackup and other backup technologies
  • Past hands-on experience with full site deployments from the planning/design stages to full implementation.
  • Prefer prior experience working for a Consulting firm, VAR, or professional services organization. 
  • Prefer those with past experience with PCI and other regulatory compliance issues in Infrastructure, as well best practices in Security applications.
  • Experience with VMWare virtualization environments and capacity/cost strategy.
  • Extensive experience working with software/hardware vendors to negotiate costs, enforce service level agreements and leverage relationships to leverage industry best practices in infrastructure implementation.
  • Knowledge of Oracle, SQL Server and database clustering technologies a plus.
  • Experience implementing systems/processes to track baseline operational procedures and advising on direction to reduce baseline operational costs while maintaining quality of service.
  • Experience working with facilities management to closely monitor critical facilities upon which computer systems are dependent for the purpose of coordinated management of infrastructure, early recognition of capacity trends and joint planning/budgeting for growth initiatives.
  • Excellent management skills with in-depth knowledge of company’ s product hosting objectives.


Person will serve as the highest-level troubleshooting specialist on team to solve complex technical issues that cannot be solved by Tier II and Tier III administration and engineering teams. 


Person needs to be ability to troubleshoot code within the lowest levels of the Operating System and Infrastructure:
  • Understanding the Kernel and Network Stack
  • Understanding of debug tools and online debugging
  • Understand how to read network dumps
  • Understand how to read core files
  • Understand how to determine driver configuration within the hardware, virtual layer, and operating system
  • Understand how to debug scripts
  • Determine bottlenecks on the current hardware, virtual layers, and operating system.


Sr. UNIX Engineer Storage & Virtualization Other Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail and top-notch problem-solving skills a must.
  • Excellent time management, communication, decision making, presentation and organization skills.
  • Certifications preferred: RHCE, RHCA, RHCSA, NetApp Storage certifications, VMWare - VCDX, VCAP, VCP, VCA
  • Very strong, analytical, technical, and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to effectively handle multiple situations, manage priorities.
  • Display a strong desire to achieve and attain high levels of both internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Must portray high levels of professionalism, motivation, and positive attitude in all endeavors.
